不可奸淫 You Shall Not Commit Adultery
出埃及记 Exo 20:14
Remember these points
I put these points at the top of my sermon-prep template to remind myself every week:
- Show that main point of passage relates to Jesus and his saving work
- (1 Cor 1:18) A truly gospel-centred message will not be acceptable in a synagogue or mosque
- Did I proclaim the gospel as the headline news of the sermon, rather than as a “by the way…”?
- Unbelievers are called to repent, believe, and be saved
- Believers are encouraged to abandon their old self, renew their minds, put on the new self in Christ
- Preach simple sermons, so that God’s people can see Christ more clearly and love him more dearly

Happy New Year!
Recap
This is a common way to group the Ten:
Four on our relationship with God,
Six on our relationship with others.
Another way is to group like the above.
Notice the order (according to the Ten Commandments).
The most important items are near the top, less important ones near the bottom.
We humans reverse this order (we’ve been doing this from OT days!)
We put possessions (so like Commandment 8, “You shall not steal”) and sex above all else,
and put God at the bottom.
Hook
How do we define adultery?
Any sexual intercourse outside of marriage.
And this includes our thoughts as well!
Passage
Exo 20:14 ESV
You shall not commit adultery.
These are just some of the OT passages that mention all sorts of forbidden sexual relationships.
Lev 18:23; Lev 18:24–25
The Bible have to list these prohibitions because people actually do them.
This was the case a few thousand years ago, and is even more so now.
We’re sort of moving society back to OT days!
Exo 22:16–17; Lev 21:13–14.
This is the first and ultimate meaning of marriage.
Jesus quoted Gen 2:24, others in NT quoted the same verse.
Matt 19:5; Mark 10:6–9.
1 Cor 6:13b; Eph 5:31–32
与我有什么关系? So What?
- Why should we keep God’s Commandments?
Because this pleases God! - Don’t follow our surrounding culture.
We need to be separate! - Don’t be selfish, thinking only of our own benefit.
Jesus Christ did the opposite: he sacrificed himself for us.
